OUR ENTRY LEVEL HIRING PROCESS

Many police agencies have lengthy hiring timelines, with the process from initial application to final appointment often taking several months—or even years. As an innovative law enforcement agency, we have developed a streamlined hiring process designed to expedite your path to joining our team. Our approach reduces both the overall time required and the amount of travel for candidates, making the process more efficient and accessible.

Below, you will find an overview of our process and how it can help you begin your career with a premier law enforcement agency.

  1. Application: Candidates must complete and submit  their application by clicking the "Apply Now" button above. Once your application is submitted, our recruitment team will review the application and if accepted will contact you with further instructions.

  2. Physical Fitness Requirement: Once your application is accepted and you have been offered a written exam date, you will be required to obtain a Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report (POWER) card. This is presented after the candidate completes a physical fitness test showing they are fit for duty. There are several locations the test is offered including McHenry County College, Joliet Junior College, Triton College, and Northeastern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy. This card is required prior to taking the written exam. The testing requirements can be found at: https://www.ptb.illinois.gov/media/1755/new-power-test-chart-2023.pdf

  3. Officer Prospect Day: Prospect Day consists of a written exam and an oral board interview. Candidates will arrive in the morning to complete their written exams. Once the exams are completed candidates will be given a short break. At the end of the break, the candidates will be advised if they passed the exam, if so those candidates will move onto the next step of the process, the oral board interviews. This interview will take approximately 20-30 minutes.

  4. Eligibility List: Candidates who pass both the written exam and oral board interviews will be deemed suitable for hire and placed onto our candidate eligibility list in order of highest cumulative score to lowest. The candidate with the highest score will be the first candidate to interview with the Chief of Police for the next open position. The Eligibility List will be posted within one to four days and available on this site as well as at the police department.
